Job Description: Qualified Nursery Teacher
Position Title: Qualified Nursery Teacher
Reports to: Nursery Manager / Head of Early Years
Location: Southgate Early Years

The Qualified Nursery Teacher is responsible for planning, delivering, and evaluating high-quality early years education for children aged 0–5 years in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and your nursery’s philosophy of nurturing, safe, and child-centred learning. They inspire children’s learning through play, support holistic development, lead the education team, and build strong partnerships with families. 


Teaching & Learning
•⁠  ⁠Plan, prepare and deliver structured, flexible, and age-appropriate learning experiences that support the EYFS framework and children’s developmental needs. 
•⁠  ⁠Assess, observe, monitor, and record children’s progress, using this to inform next steps for learning. 
•⁠  ⁠Use a variety of teaching strategies—including play-based and adult-led activities—to engage learners and foster curiosity and confidence. 

Leadership & Teamwork
•⁠  ⁠Lead and support nursery practitioners, modelling high standards of practice and professional behaviour. 
•⁠  ⁠Coordinate with colleagues to ensure consistency in delivery and continuity of care. 
•⁠  ⁠Provide mentoring and guidance, particularly to newer or less experienced staff members. 

Environment & Safeguarding
•⁠  ⁠Maintain a safe, inclusive and stimulating environment that nurtures children’s social, emotional, physical, and intellectual development. 
•⁠  ⁠Ensure health and safety standards are upheld at all times; conduct risk assessments and adhere to safeguarding procedures. 

Parental Engagement
•⁠  ⁠Build strong relationships with parents/carers, communicating daily with them about children’s progress and needs. 
•⁠  ⁠Encourage parent involvement and support family engagement in all aspects of their child’s learning. 

Professional Development
•⁠  ⁠Stay up to date with developments in early years education and best practice; attend relevant training.

Qualifications
•⁠  ⁠Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS), or equivalent professional qualification. 
•⁠  ⁠Degree in Early Childhood or related field desirable. 
•⁠  ⁠Paediatric First Aid and safeguarding training (or willingness to complete).

Job Description: Unqualified Nursery Teacher 
Position Title: Unqualified Nursery Practitioner / Early Years Practitioner
Reports to: Nursery Manager / Qualified Teacher
Location: Southgate Early Years


The Unqualified Nursery Practitioner supports the delivery of high-quality care and education for children aged 0–5 in a safe, nurturing environment. Working under the direction of the Nursery Manager and/or Qualified Teacher, the Practitioner assists with daily activities, supports children’s developmental needs, and helps maintain a stimulating setting. 


Childcare & Support
•⁠  ⁠Provide warm, attentive, and responsive care to children, supporting their well-being and development. 
•⁠  ⁠Support the implementation of planned activities and routines (e.g., play, mealtimes, rest). 
•⁠  ⁠Encourage children’s social, physical, and emotional development through play and interactions. 

Learning Environment
•⁠  ⁠Help prepare and maintain safe, clean, and engaging play and learning spaces. 
•⁠  ⁠Observe children during activities and report developmental progress or concerns to the qualified staff. 
•⁠  ⁠Assist with record-keeping and documentation as directed. 

Health & Safety
•⁠  ⁠Follow nursery policies for safeguarding, behaviour management, hygiene, and emergency procedures. 
•⁠  ⁠Support routines that promote children’s health and safety, including nappy changing and hygiene standards. 

Communication & Teamwork
•⁠  ⁠Build positive relationships with children and work collaboratively with the team to ensure consistent care. 
•⁠  ⁠Communicate respectfully with parents/carers about daily care routines and children’s achievements. 

Qualifications & Experience
•⁠  ⁠A relevant childcare qualification (e.g., Level 2 or Level 3 in Childcare & Education) is desirable but not essential. 
•⁠  ⁠Experience working in a nursery or with young children beneficial. 

Skills & Attributes
•⁠  ⁠Passionate about working with young children and committed to their development. 
•⁠  ⁠Good communication skills and ability to work as part of a team. 
•⁠  ⁠Patient, reliable, and nurturing.
